In our view, the ideal high street blend will aim to reflect the community’s needs and be led by great local independents, supported by some fine-tuned national brands that think locally.

Food and drink offers will play a key role, including bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and speciality local produce stores.

Designer-maker fashion workshops will make a come-back together with health & wellbeing brands offering everything from nutrition classes to gym sessions.

Leisure and entertainment will provide the lifeblood, with local comedy clubs, cinemas and theatres and outdoor green spaces making a resurgence.

We also see the seamless integration of housing making a resurgence within high streets, through the rebirth of shophouses, providing a base for local entrepreneurs to live, make and retail their own products. Spaces to meet and co-work will also play a fundamental role, as people continue with a more flexible approach to working. Craft and activity spaces will feature too, whether it’s learning a craft or providing local maintenance.

Finally, at the heart of every great high street will be inspirational places for people to gather, learn, celebrate, and experience entertainment – this will re-establish dormant communities into vital, thriving expressions of local life.
